The July 19th Crowdstrike Crash

On July 19, 2024, CrowdStrike experienced a significant incident due to a faulty update to their Falcon sensor configuration. This update, released at 04:09 UTC, contained a logic error that caused the software to crash, leading to widespread system failures, including the dreaded “blue screen of death” for millions of Windows users. The update was intended to enhance security but instead triggered a system crash, affecting systems running Falcon sensor for Windows version 7.11 and above (CISA) (Home Page).

The impact was profound, with critical infrastructure, including airlines like Delta, experiencing severe disruptions. Delta had to cancel thousands of flights as their crew scheduling systems, heavily reliant on Windows, were affected (CrowdStrike). The incident highlighted the vulnerability of complex software systems and the importance of robust backup and recovery strategies to mitigate such risks.

CrowdStrike has since implemented additional testing and staged rollouts for updates to prevent similar issues in the future. They have also provided remediation steps and support for affected customers, emphasizing the need for manual intervention to resolve the crashes (CrowdStrike).

Fusion IT’s customers were not effected.
